FBI Statistics Show Nearly 14 Hate Crimes Every Day Against Gays and Lesbians In 2009

Protect Your Family Against Hate Crimes

Statistics released by the FBI today showed there were 1254 reported hate crimes committed against Gay and Lesbian Americans in 2009.

There were 6,604 criminal incidents characterized as hate crimes reported in the United States in 2009, according to an FBI report release Monday.

Nearly 19 percent of the crimes were due to a person’s sexual orientation.

According to the Gay and Lesbian human rights organization Egale, an estimated 75% of hate crimes against our community go unreported. Many victims remain silent out of fear of losing their jobs or homes in states where Gay and Lesbian Americans are not protected against workplace or housing discrimination. Still others fear retribution from homophobic police officers.

Factoring in these numbers we arrive at a staggering 5016 hate crimes committed against Gay and Lesbian Americans in 2009 or almost 14 hate crimes every day!

The report also shows that the largest percentage of hate crime incidents occurred in or near private homes. This emphasizes the need for enhanced home security and personal defense.

Many states allow the use of lethal force in self defense situations. Castle Laws, for instance, give people the legal right to defend themselves in their home with deadly force. Research your state laws and determine the lethal defense boundaries.

Do not tolerate violence against our community.

Build Your Own Small Shelter

Build A Country Cottage And Enjoy Nature

One of the most empowering things a person can do is build their own home and live in it. I am not talking about a sprawling 6000 sq foot McMansion in the suburban wastelands of America but a small efficient cottage designed to your needs and built to compliment the environment.

A few hundred square feet will do. The first cabin I built was only 8 x 10 but it had everything I needed. It was private and secluded. I could hike naked all day long then relax by the roaring fire at night watching the stars. I built it over a couple of weekends for around $300.

A shelter is a simple thing. It must keep you warm and dry plus stop the animals from snacking on your feet while you sleep.

Lloyd Kahn produced some of the best books on the subject of small shelters. They are a great inspiration for anyone looking to build their own.

All you need is a small piece of land and some imagination.

Do some research in your area. I would suggest a rural lot with good southern exposure in a wooded area for privacy. A few acre will do, all you need is a building site, area for small garden and some room for some chickens. The more land the more taxes so only pickup what you need. Pay cash for everything but trade for it if you can.

You may have a beautiful home in the city with the spectacular 30 year mortgage that goes along with it. What are you going to do when you lose your job or decided to leave the consumer society behind? A small self contained cottage in the country that’s paid for is a great fall back option and beats living out of your car. If nothing else it’s a great weekend getaway or retirement plan.

What You Gonna Do When The Fridge Is Empty

The sole contents of my refrigerator were a case of Pabst, half bottle of soy sauce, two year old moldy chilly in moms favorite tupperware bowl and about a half a million ketchup packets.

No bottled water…cause of course I never fell for that scam…but the freezer had a nearly full bottle of Absolute and some awesome frosted mugs I’d picked up a few weeks back but I wasn’t worried, I knew I would be fine.

Earlier that evening the sexy weather stud had said to expect snow, sleet and ice as the cold front moved in.

Again, I was not worried, you see I plan ahead. My place was strategically located only a half a block from my favorite Gay bar…problem solved! Get a burger, drink a little and hook up with a hot bear to keep me warm overnight. All Good!

So as the nasty evening progressed I had a couple Pabst…not to much cause icy out…pulled on my “come fuck me finest” to guarantee maximum bear warmth later then headed out the door.

The power went out as I hit the street. Darkness is very disorienting if you are not used to it especially after a few beers and a couple vodka shots. I regained my senses and continued towards the bar feeling my way down the street. The bar after all was my backup plan for food and warmth and I had to get there.

After falling twice I realize the ice was much thicker than I had anticipated and giving in I turned back. Still…like a black out bath house party…I hoped to slide into that perfect bear in the darkness but it wasn’t to be.

Disoriented from the disco strobing emergency lights in the hall and the bit of Papst in my system I ended up putting my key in the neighbors door and throwing an appropriate fit when it didn’t open.

Gina was a well stocked commando Lesbian and a great neighbor. She completely understood our current state grilling me on my preparedness for such an event. She sent me home after giving me a loaf of bread and few cans of soup which of course I couldn’t even open cause I didn’t have a manual can opener…let alone cook without power. I ended up sleeping on her couch in front of the kerosene heater. It smelled but was warm……….

Gina and I bonded in a freaky and uncomfortable way over those three days…she made me pee in a coffee can and watched. Luckily the power returned and I didn’t have to become her ice bitch.

My three days of ice bound terror gave me a great appreciation of how fragile our existence is on this earth. Please put back a few weeks of prepared food and make sure you have a fall back heat source to keep you alive. I love our Lesbian sisters but………
